Syllabus for Semester 1 for Geometry

1)      Review of basic concepts forming a foundation to Geometry: (3 weeks)

Understand Points, Lines and Planes, Construct Segments, Construct Angles, Common Pairs of Angles, Basic formulas used in Geometry, Transformations in the Coordinate Plane

2)      Geometric Reasoning and Proof: (4 weeks)

Inductive and Deductive Reasoning, Conditional and Biconditional Statements, Algebraic Proofs, Geometric Proofs

3)      Parallel and Perpendicular Lines: (4 weeks)

Names of Angles formed by parallel lines, Proving lines are parallel, Construct parallel and perpendicular lines, Slope and Lines in the Coordinate Plane

4)      Triangles: (4 weeks)

Congruence and Transformation of Triangles, Classifying Triangles, Angle Relationships within Triangles, Proving Triangles Congruent, Coordinate Proofs, Isosceles and Equilateral Triangle Properties

5)      Properties and Attributes of Triangles: (3 weeks)

Incenter, Circumcenter, Orthocenter and Centroid, Midsegment of a Triangle, Indirect Proof, Inequalities in a Triangle, Inequalities in Two Triangles, Pythagorean Theorem, 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 right triangles

6)      Polygons and Quadrilaterals: (3 weeks)

Properties and Attributes of Polygons with emphasis on Parallelograms, Rhombi, Rectangles and Squares, as well as Kites and Trapezoids

 

 Grading will be by Category:

              Homework                      25%

Classroom Rules:

1)      I will attempt to treat you with the utmost respect, and I expect you to treat me with respect in return.

2)      With your help, we will try to eliminate controllable distractions.

3)      No food or drinks will be allowed. Water in a sealed container is the only exception to this rule.

4)      Chewing gum will be acceptable, as long as you find a trash receptacle for it and the wrapper when you are done. When I find gum wrappers or gum in inappropriate places, this privilege will be eliminated.

 

I am pleased that you have chosen to take this class. I hope that you are prepared to work. I can’t make the material easy for you, but I will try everything I can think of to help you. If you are willing to make the effort, I believe that you will find that you can be successful. Some may not completely understand every single thing we do, but all should see improvement in their understanding. For the most part, Math is a sequential subject, so my goal is to keep everyone moving down the path, no matter where you started!
